The Vital Role of Blockchain in Dutch Fight Against Coronavirus

April 02, 2020

Blockchain will play a major role in the new Tech against Corona initiative, launched by a consortium of Dutch companies. The project will provide the Dutch government, aid workers, care providers and hospitals with free access to a variety of technologies in the effort to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tymlez, provider of a blockchain platform for enabling transparency in the medical supply chain, is one of more than 10 Netherlands-based companies involved in the initiative. The company, which also focuses on distributed ledger technology, will provide its blockchain to prevent predatory value extraction like price gouging within the medical supply chain.

The main value of using a blockchain platform for the project will be to model the medical goods ecosystem based on a system of supply and demand. Tymlez will be working with companies like Cybersprint, which provides cybersecurity services to hospitals, and information security firm Taxion, which will administer online systems for organizing volunteer workers.

Other participants in the Tech against Corona initiative include IT firm Compumatica, which will enhance internet connections for remote workers who are operating in critical services industries. And Dutch telecom giant KPN will partner with Microsoft to provide computing systems for the initiative.

“We stay at home to keep each other safe," said Jan Middendorp, a member of parliament. "Technology can help [keep] us safe. It is therefore more important than ever in these exceptional times for governments and tech companies to work together.”

“It’s fantastic that these companies are willing to assist the government," said Chris van Dam, a member of parliament. "These smart tech heads are desperately needed right now.”

The Dutch Red Cross is already accepting Bitcoin donations through its website to help combat COVID-19. And the Italian Red Cross has raised close to $20,000 in BTC for purchasing medical supplies like an advanced medical post for pre-triage treatment of coronavirus patients.

Blockchain technologies are set to play a vital role in combatting COVID-19 and beyond. To provide education and valuable information and networking opportunities, TMC is hosting The Blockchain Event at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami, FL from June 22-25, 2021. Colocated with ITEXPO, the event will offer dedicated content about how blockchain is disrupting and transforming a variety of industries while also creating a new global economy.
