Breitling Reissues Top Time Watch Registered with Blockchain

April 03, 2020

In the James Bond movie “Thunderball,” 007 wore a 1960s-era Breitling Top Time watch that contained an added Bond flair: a mini Geiger counter. Now, the luxury watch company is re-releasing the classic timepiece. While it doesn’t have a Geiger counter, it does contain cutting-edge technology: instead of the standard certificate of authenticity, Breitling is registering each timepiece on a private blockchain that will follow its provenance from owner to owner.

Buyers of the Breitling Top Time Limited Edition, which features the classic “Zorro dial,” will be able to access the watch’s digital passport at any time and transfer ownership – if they choose to do so – with a simple blockchain transaction. Breitling has partnered with security platform Arianee to build the timepiece’s digital passport and offer the absolute security that can only be provided by a blockchain system, according to the company. The technology will make it possible for customers to engage with the brand anonymously, allowing Breitling to add new online services ranging from advanced clienteling to a revolutionary care program.

The Top Time Limited Edition watch is limited to 2,000 pieces, and its caseback is engraved with “ONE OF 2000.” While it was technically launched in March, the company said the watch will be available upon request from the brand’s global retail network at a later date.

“Breitling aficionados have always loved the Top Time’s dial. When it was released more than 50 years ago, it was a watch that appealed to a younger audience committed to enjoying the freedom and the spirit of the 1960s, and, amazingly, after all this time, it continues to stand out,” said Breitling CEO Georges Kern in a statement. “The Top Time is an important but often-overlooked part of our heritage, and we know it’s going to resonate with men and women who love this blend of history, design, and great performance.”
