Hospitals Turn to Blockchain Tech for Vaccine Logistics
Developing the COVID19 vaccine was a monumental task in its own right, but now hospitals and government agencies are dealing with the complications of quick distribution to the general public. Some versions of the vaccine require very specific conditions for travel, which means close monitoring of supply-chain data is critical for success.
Everyware’s distributed ledger is now being used by two British hospitals to help with this process, allowing administrators to monitor data for the temperature-sensitive vaccines developed by Pfizer and BioNTech. The technology is an offshoot of regular blockchain tech, and will be used to efficiently analyze data in real time while keeping the data secure. The public, specifically the eldery and at-risk individuals, are depending on the fast delivery of this vaccine, making blockchain a useful tool for ensuring shipments go according to plan.
“We can absolutely verify the data that we’ve collected from every single device,” commented Everyware Technical Director Tom Screen, “We make sure that data is accurate at source, and after that point we can verify that it’s never been changed, it’s never been tampered with.”
Screen does admit that it would be possible to monitor the vaccines without using this technology, but the system would be vulnerable to mistakes. Because of the urgent nature of these tasks, hospitals cannot afford to risk having compromised data.
